Jon Klavens is the principal of Klavens Law Group, P.C. While his practice spans a wide range of general corporate, land use, environmental and nonprofit matters, he focuses in large part on providing start-up, outside general counsel, transactional, project development and energy regulatory services to companies, investors, public entities and nonprofits in the energy/clean energy and clean technology areas. He also provides legal services to a broad array of for-profit and nonprofit social enterprises.
Prior to founding Klavens Law Group in June 2007, Jon practiced from 2004 to 2007 at BCK Law, P.C. (formerly Bernstein Cushner & Kimmell, P.C.) and from 1994 to 2004 at Goodwin Procter, LLP, first as an environmental and land use attorney and then as a corporate attorney. From 1993 to 1994, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Norman H. Stahl at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Jon is a member of the board of directors of the Cleantech Open Northeast business competition and has served as a chair of the competition’s judging committee since its inception in 2005. Jon is also a member of the advisory board of the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute and SolSolutions. He has made presentations and authored articles and publications on various energy, environmental, land use, and administrative law topics.
Jon is a graduate of Columbia University (BA 1987), Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government (MPP 1992), and Northeastern University School of Law (JD 1993), and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Washington, DC.
Sarah Matthews serves as senior counsel of Klavens Law Group, P.C. She brings an insider’s understanding of the business needs and legal challenges of cleantech companies and a diverse legal background to her work with renewable energy ventures.
Sarah has over twenty years of experience practicing with corporate legal departments and law firms in a broad range of practice areas including corporate formation and governance, debt and equity financing, commercial contracts, intellectual property licensing and protection, employment law, commercial real estate and municipal law.
Prior to joining Klavens Law Group, Sarah served from 2007 to 2010 as in-house general counsel of Qteros, Inc., a venture-backed, biofuels company headquartered in Marlborough, MA. She also served as general counsel of Gravity Graphics, Inc., a wholesale apparel company located in Brooklyn, New York, from its formation in 1986 through its profitable divestiture in 1998. Concurrent with her time at Gravity Graphics, Sarah practiced at the Martha’s Vineyard law firm Reynolds, Rappaport & Kaplan (1991-1999), and with the Washington, DC law firms Breed Abbott & Morgan (later acquired by Winston & Strawn) (1989-1991) and Barrett, Montgomery & Murphy (1986-1988).
Sarah is a graduate of the University of Michigan (BA 1981) and Georgetown University Law Center (JD 1986), and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Washington, DC.
Jordan Grant serves as senior counsel of Klavens Law Group, P.C. Jordan brings a deep background in sophisticated corporate transactions and commercial contracts, representing operating companies, lenders, sponsors and developers, and institutional and individual investors. For nearly ten years he has provided clients with effective, practical and outcome-oriented legal representation and business advice in a broad array of matters.
Jordan has experience practicing in several areas of corporate and business law, including debt and equity financing in the commercial real estate, waste management, energy and infrastructure and retail sectors, real estate and corporate joint ventures, corporate formation and governance, and intellectual property licensing. He has also acted as outside general counsel for early stage technology companies.
Prior to joining Klavens Law Group, Jordan practiced from 2006 to 2012 in the Business Group of Boston-based Goulston and Storrs, P.C., and from 2003 to 2006 in the Project Finance Group of the New York firm Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, LLP.
Jordan is a graduate of Columbia University (BA 1996) and New York University School of Law (JD 2003), and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and New York.
